In 1973 Ralph Curzon started Hyphen Repairs Inc. in St. Catherines Ontario.
St. Catherines was chosen due to the advantages of rent. This one-man
business grew with the word being spread by The Upper Canada Region of
Rolls-Royce Owners' Club. The type of work first done tended to be large
rebuilding jobs such as front end and overhauls, engine rebuilds and the like.
As time went on it was decided that the cost of the rent was not as large a
factor as the type of work we were missing out on by being to far from Toronto.
So in 1975 it was decided that the company should move to Mississauga, thus
being closer to Toronto and the more favourable service work.
At this location, on Woodchester Drive, the company grew with an additional
staff member as soon as we opened and another after a few months. The
company continued to add customers and cars and in 1976 Tony Curzon joined the
Company. Over the next fours years the company expanded to nine employees,
repairing all facets of the cars. The end of the decade also brought a
down turn in the economy. The overhead the company was carrying seemed to be too
large so we decided to move to reduce the expenses. This was achieved by moving
away from an expensive retail area to a commercial site near the airport. This
is our present location.
Over the next ten years the company expanded to carry a large inventory of
Rolls-Royce Spares and to undertake a number of complete restorations. At
the end of the eighties a recession hit Ontario's economy, which lasted almost
seven years. This of course devastated the company and at the end of this period
the company was left with one employee and the two brothers. In the time
since 1997 to the present day, the company has recovered but the economy and
market has not returned to the 1980's prosperity.
Hyphen Repairs Inc. has always supported the Upper Canada Region of the
Rolls- Royce Owners' Club and in 1976 a Shadow Flying Lady mounted in a walnut
base was donated to the region in the company name, to be kept by the region and
the winner of the "Hyphen Rally" name would be attached to it.
This has been a continuing event for Twenty-Seven years.
